Privacy Policy
DRAFT — under review by Known Earth's owner. This is a plain-English draft, not legal advice, and may change before Known Earth opens to the public.
What we keep
- Your account: your email address, your password (stored only as a secure hash by our login provider), and the display name you choose.
- Your trips: places you visited, their map locations, trip dates, and the trip story.
- Your journal: highlights, transportation, hotels, restaurants, activities, and notes you write.
- Your photos: images you upload. We strip hidden photo metadata (such as GPS coordinates and camera details) before saving, so the stored file doesn't carry your exact location.
- Family sharing: who belongs to an atlas, who went on each trip, pending invitation emails, and who wrote each entry.
Who can see it
Your atlas is private. Only people you invite into it can see it. Shared entries are visible to everyone in that atlas and show who wrote them. Entries you mark private are visible only to you — not even the atlas owner can see them. When someone is removed from an atlas, they lose access immediately.
Services that handle data for us
- Supabase stores the database, logins, and photos.
- Vercel hosts the website.
- Mapbox draws the globe and looks up place names; it receives map requests and place searches, not your journal.
- Stripe (planned, not yet active) will handle payments. Known Earth will never see or store your card number.
What we don't do
We don't sell your data, share it with advertisers, or use your photos or journal for anything other than showing them to you and the people in your atlas.
Your choices
From the Account page you can download your data as a file, and delete your account. Deleting removes your login, your private entries, your photos, and any atlas only you use. Shared entries you wrote in someone else's atlas stay for them, without your name. Backups held by our providers may take a short time to expire.
